DIY Birdhouse Construction
Build a simple and functional birdhouse to attract feathered friends.

Materials & Tools Needed
Step-by-Step Instructions
Cut Wood Pieces
Cut wood planks into the following pieces: Front (6x8 inches), Back (6x10 inches), Sides (2 pieces, 5x8 inches tapering to 5x6 inches), Floor (4x4 inches), Roof (2 pieces, 6x6 inches).
💡 Pro Tip
Use untreated wood like pine or cedar. Avoid treated lumber as it can be toxic to birds.
Drill Entrance Hole
On the front piece, drill an entrance hole. Size depends on desired bird species (e.g., 1.5 inches for bluebirds, 1.25 inches for wrens). Place it about 6 inches from the bottom.
Assemble the Walls
Attach side pieces to the front and back pieces using wood glue and screws. Ensure the tapered sides create the roof angle.
Attach the Floor
Fit the floor piece inside the assembled walls and attach with glue and screws. Drill a few small drainage holes in the floor.
Attach the Roof
Attach the two roof pieces to the top edges of the side walls, overlapping slightly at the peak. Ensure there's a slight overhang to protect from rain.
💡 Pro Tip
Consider hinging one roof panel for easier cleaning.
Sand and Finish
Sand all rough edges and surfaces. You can leave the wood natural or paint the exterior with non-toxic, water-based paint. Avoid painting the interior or around the entrance hole.
Mount the Birdhouse
Mount the birdhouse on a pole or tree, ideally facing away from prevailing winds and direct afternoon sun. Clean out old nesting material annually.
