Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Plan Your Dimensions

Design workbench based on available space and your height. Standard height is 34-36 inches. Typical size is 6 feet long, 2-3 feet deep. Plan for storage below.

💡 Pro Tip

Bench height should be at your hip level when standing for comfortable work.

2

Cut All Lumber

Cut four 34-inch legs, four 72-inch long rails, four 24-inch short rails, and shelf supports from 2x4s. Cut 3/4 inch plywood for top (72×24 inches) and lower shelf.

3

Build the Frame Sides

Create two identical side frames. Attach short rails between two legs using pocket holes or mortise-tenon joints. Position top rail flush with leg top, bottom rail 4 inches up.

4

Connect Front and Back

Stand side frames upright and connect with long rails front and back. Ensure frame is square by measuring diagonals - they should be equal.

💡 Pro Tip

Have a helper steady frames while connecting, or use temporary bracing.

5

Add Cross Supports

Install cross bracing or stretchers between front and back rails for additional stability. Consider adding support for a lower shelf at this stage.

6

Install Lower Shelf

Cut and install plywood lower shelf on support boards. This adds storage and significantly increases overall bench rigidity.

7

Prepare Work Surface

Use double layer of 3/4 inch plywood for work surface, or single layer of hardwood like maple. Glue and screw layers together if doubling up.

8

Attach Work Surface

Center work surface on frame and attach from underneath using wood screws driven through rails. Use washers for better hold and to allow seasonal wood movement.

9

Add Edge Trim

Attach hardwood strips around work surface edge to protect plywood edges and create a finished appearance. Miter corners for professional look.

10

Install Vise

Mount woodworking vise to front edge or corner of bench according to manufacturer instructions. Position jaw flush with or slightly below work surface.

💡 Pro Tip

Front vise is most versatile. End vise is better for working long boards.

11

Apply Finish

Sand entire bench smooth. Apply polyurethane, tung oil, or Danish oil to protect wood. Work surface may be left unfinished if preferred for glue-ups and finishing work.
