Step-by-Step Instructions
Safety Preparation
Wear safety goggles, gloves, and long sleeves. Work in well-ventilated area. Have vinegar nearby to neutralize lye if needed. Keep pets and children away.
💡 Pro Tip
Lye is caustic and dangerous. Always add lye to water, never water to lye (causes eruption).
Prepare Lye Solution
Carefully measure distilled water into heat-safe container. Slowly add lye to water while stirring gently. Solution will heat to 200°F. Let cool to 100-110°F.
Measure and Heat Oils
Weigh oils according to recipe (typically 16 oz olive oil, 13 oz coconut oil, 5 oz castor oil for beginner batch). Gently heat oils together to 100-110°F.
Combine Lye and Oils
When both lye and oils are at proper temperature (within 10 degrees of each other), slowly pour lye solution into oils while stirring continuously.
Blend to Trace
Use stick blender to mix, alternating short bursts with hand stirring. Mix until light trace - mixture thickens like pudding and leaves a trail when drizzled.
💡 Pro Tip
Trace can take 5-20 minutes. Don't over-blend or soap may seize.
Add Extras
Once at trace, add essential oils (1 oz per lb of oils), colorants, or exfoliants. Mix thoroughly but quickly as soap continues to thicken.
Pour Into Molds
Pour soap mixture into prepared molds. Tap molds on counter to release air bubbles. Smooth tops with spatula. Cover molds with cardboard or towel.
Insulation and Gel Phase
Insulate molds with towels for 24 hours. Soap will heat up and go through gel phase, becoming translucent. This is normal and desired for harder bars.
Cure the Soap
After 24-48 hours, unmold and cut into bars. Place bars on rack in cool, dry location with good air circulation. Cure for 4-6 weeks, turning weekly. This completes saponification and hardens bars.
