How to Knit Wool Socks
Create comfortable hand-knitted wool socks with traditional techniques.

Materials & Tools Needed
Step-by-Step Instructions
Gather Materials
Select sock-weight yarn (fingering weight) in wool or wool blend. Use size 1-2 (2.25-2.75mm) double-pointed needles or circular needles for magic loop method.
💡 Pro Tip
Wool blends with nylon add durability to high-wear areas like heels.
Cast On and Join
Cast on 64 stitches using long-tail method. Divide evenly across needles and join in the round, being careful not to twist stitches. Place marker for beginning of round.
Knit the Cuff
Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 2 inches. This creates stretch and helps sock stay up. The ribbing should fit snugly but comfortably around the ankle.
Work the Leg
Continue in stockinette stitch (knit every round) or chosen pattern for 6-8 inches from cast on, or desired leg length. Try on occasionally for fit.
Turn the Heel
Work heel flap on half the stitches (32 sts) in back-and-forth rows for 2.5 inches. Then shape heel turn using short rows, creating the rounded heel cup.
💡 Pro Tip
Heel turn can be tricky for beginners. Watch video tutorials for visual guidance.
Pick Up Gusset Stitches
Pick up stitches along sides of heel flap (about 16 stitches per side). Resume knitting in the round with all stitches on needles. Place markers for gusset.
Decrease Gusset
Work gusset decreases every other round at markers until you return to original stitch count (64 sts). This shapes the sock to fit around the arch of foot.
Knit the Foot
Continue in stockinette stitch for 2 inches less than desired total foot length. Try sock on foot periodically to check length before toe shaping.
Shape the Toe
Decrease at four points (both sides of top and bottom of foot) every other round until 24 stitches remain, then every round until 8 stitches remain.
Finish and Block
Cut yarn leaving 12-inch tail. Thread through remaining stitches, pull tight, and weave in all ends. Wash gently and block to shape. Knit the second sock!
