Leather Wallet Crafting
Hand-stitch a premium leather wallet using traditional leatherworking techniques.

Materials & Tools Needed
Step-by-Step Instructions
Select Leather and Pattern
Choose vegetable-tanned leather 3-4 oz thickness for outer wallet, 2-3 oz for card pockets. Find or create a bifold wallet pattern with dimensions that suit your needs.
Cut Leather Pieces
Trace pattern onto leather using awl or stylus. Cut pieces carefully with sharp utility knife or leather shears. You need: outer panels (2), card slots (4-6), and bill compartment.
💡 Pro Tip
Cut on cutting mat and use metal straight edge for straight lines.
Skive the Edges
Thin edges of pocket pieces where they overlap using a skiving knife. This reduces bulk where multiple layers meet, creating a slimmer wallet profile.
Mark Stitch Lines
Use stitching groover to create shallow channel 3mm from edges where stitching will go. Use divider or wing compass to mark evenly spaced hole positions along groove.
Punch Stitching Holes
Place leather on hard surface or rubber mat. Use diamond chisel or pricking iron to punch stitching holes along marked lines. Keep angle consistent for uniform slant.
Dye and Finish Edges
Apply leather dye to all edges using small brush or wool dauber. Build color in thin coats. Once dry, burnish edges with wood slicker and water or gum tragacanth for glossy finish.
💡 Pro Tip
Edge finishing is what separates amateur from professional work.
Assemble Card Pockets
Stack card pocket pieces and align with outer panel. Use small clamps or binder clips to hold in position while you work. Glue or rubber cement lightly to hold position.
Saddle Stitch Assembly
Thread two needles with waxed thread (arm's length plus 6 inches). Begin saddle stitch: pass one needle through first hole, then alternate sides maintaining even tension.
Complete All Seams
Stitch around entire wallet perimeter and between pockets. Backstitch at ends to secure. Trim thread ends and burn slightly to mushroom for security.
💡 Pro Tip
Maintain consistent tension for professional appearance. Don't pull too tight or leather will pucker.
Final Finishing
Apply leather conditioner to outer surfaces. Buff to desired sheen. Let wallet rest for 24 hours. Consider embossing or stamping personalization before conditioning.
